If apps such as Gmail and Google Pay have recently been crashing on your Android phone, you're not alone — it appears to be a widespread issue.

Numerous user reports on Downdetector indicate there are issues with Gmail, and reports on Reddit speak of Gmail "constantly crashing" since Monday. Furthermore, Google's own Workspace Status Dashboard said the company is "aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users."

The issue, which appears to stem from a system app called Android System WebView, has now been fixed.

"The problem with Gmail has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better," said Google in a note on the Workspace Status Dashboard.

To fix the problem, users should update both Google Chrome and Android System WebView via Google Play. To do that, open the Play Store app, search for Android System WebView, and hit "Update." Then, repeat the process for Google Chrome.
